Which oil filter is better and which one do you use? I use fram but I have heard bad things about them in the past. Supposebly they dont filter that well and puralator is suppose to do a better job. They both look the same to me, cardboard/paper filters. But Im told there is a diff btw the two. So which is really better and are Frams really a bad filter?

 

i would use any filter over fram
purlator is def better than fram but i personally use a k&n but would also suggest a napa gold or mobil 1

 

I've had a couple of mechanics tell me that if you're going to get the cheapest filter possible, spend the extra 50 cents and get a Purolator Premium. The Purolator Pure Ones supposedly provide better filtration because of the synthetic filter element, BUT according to the article posted in the general tech section of this forum, Motorcraft filters are currently actually Purolator Pure One filters and they cost the same as the regular Purolator Premium where I buy my filters. I compared the Purolator Pure One I just put on my car to the Motorcraft I took off of it and all the markings; stamped numbers, hole shape/pattern, crimps for the gasket, etc, were exactly the same, which leads me to believe the article is correct. Mobil 1 and K&N filters may be the best, but you pay a premium.

 

I recommend Fram if you're looking for an excuse to replace your engine.

You could just go ahead and replace the filter and top off your engine with about half a quart.

But then again, for all the horrible things said about Frams on internet forums (where only huge nerds that like to discuss minutia largely deemed irrelevant by the general population hang out) there are probably more of them out there than anything thanks to Sprawl-Mart and for every story about a Fram filter element shredding or one blowing off, there are a dozen people saying that they've used them on everything for years and years and never had a problem.

 

i have always used fram or toughguard in my two stangs and have not had any problem exept when i was having trouble with spun bearingsand an undersized crankshaft and broken and no pressure building oil pumps but that has nothing to do with using a fram filter

 

just a basic filter is more than enough. even the cheapest filters out there filter particles too small to cause damage and resist burst pressures far greater than any street engine can produce and last 5,000 miles.

the cheapest filter is fine. i personally use Advance Total grip filters. cheap and easy to take back off after 3,000+ miles. never once had any problem with a cheap filter.

this wasen't true 30 years ago but today's standards are so high that cheap generic filters today are far better than premium ones 30 yrs ago

Well theres your supporting evidence that Fram is agarbage filter. I guess its not opinion/rumor spread through word of mouth byeveryonesdad's friend cousine brother friend uncle who livesall the wayin Cali likeI thought.

**** and I have been paying a few extra cent more for a Fram when the purolaters where actually better.

 

Use a Motorcraft, it is a PureOne with with a natural rubber valve instead of synthetic. The filter media is the same. and usually only 2-4 bucks!!!
