Default RE: engine ping

ORIGINAL: mackstang99

i've bought gas from all over and as long as its 87 it pings and even the higher stuff pings when the tank gets real low

i've run fuel injector cleaner time and time again... no help

so a colder spark plug would help? and can someone explain how i check the filter... and what an MAF wire is thanks

If it's been a while since you replaced the filter just put in a new one, they can plug up in no time. The reason it pings is detonation. That is when they are hot spots in the cylinder some place which causes the gas to burn too soon. A colder spark plug will usually correct it but just go 1 - 2 steps colder and no more.

Default and the answer is....

hello all. I had the same question months ago with no answer. it isn't any of those things. it's the recalled valve cover. there is a baffle inside that doesn't work correctly. you have to either a. get a 2000 valve cover or b. put an inline filter behind your pcv valve. (which is what I did and it works great). you can get info out there on the net.

you have a 1999 correct???

they are known for bad valvecovers allowing the PCV to draw too much oil into the intake which will cause detonation or pinging.

easy solution.

1st make an oil catch by using a glass or plastic catch bulb in line from the PCV valve to the intake
2nd seafoam the engine through the PCV line
3rd use a cold plug like a Haloplug or an autolite 103

problem will be solved and you can run 87 octane like the rest of us (except me with my blower)

ok you said the pcv valve cover is bad on the 99 v6 but is it still bad on the 2000 v6 or do you think it is any of the other things because it has all the same symptoms??

it is the thing located in the passengerside valve cover ( at least on 94-98's) the baffels on 99 and 2000's are horrid and let too much oil get sucked up into the intake.

search pcv valve on 3.8mustang.com alot of guy's there eithere deleted the PCV or made a catch bulb like i described. it's real easy to do. just cut the rubber hose from the PCV to the intake and put a catch bulb in there and drain it periodically.

if the car is already detonating then it will need a shot of seafoam though the vacume lines in the intake to remove excess oil deposits on the intake valves. run colder plugs also
