3.8 gets sluggish
I have a 1985 3.8l FI v-6 that runs great until it gets hot. After the engine gets hot and I take off from a stop or from a very low speed the engine just dies. It gets so slow it is rather imbarasing. But after a couple hundred feet it starts to pick up speed again slowly. It takes a bit to get up to speed but then it is strong until I stop again. I realy need some help on this, it has realy got me stumped. I have changed the fuel filter, plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor button and the pcv valve. HELP PLEASE
it's a CFI which is pre OBD I so no codes to read.
alot of those cars developed bad injectors plus some have a heating grid between the intake and throttlebody/injectors to eliminate cold start emissions. these tend to clog and make the car low on power. you fuel pump could be going bad which is what i would check first. have a mechanic put a fuelpressure gauge (one that you can read inside the car while driving)on the car and drive it to see if there is a pressure drop when the power loss happens. most likely that is the problem or a bad fuel pressure regulator

buddy of mine was doing similar, turned out his transmission wasnt downshifting into 1st gear , he was taking off in second , sometimes in 3rd gear and was a dog off the line bogging down.seems it would get stuck in whatever gear he was in when he slowed down to stop.
