Default Power Boost

Whats up guys. I have a 2001 3.8L and I wanted to add a boost to the HP without spending thousands of dollars. What would you guys recommend for small boost at a reasonable cost?

Gotta pay to play. Anything cheap won't give you ****. Nitrous is the cheapest way for quick power, though.

Nothing more than sound. Maybe 1-2 HP on a catback, another 2 if you take off the cats. A total of maybe 10-12 with long tube headers, off road midpipe and catback.

The 3.8 responds like **** to bolt ons. So does the 2v GT. Only the Mach 1's and Cobra 4v's respond well to bolt ons.

K&N Air Filter with an Air Silencer removal will cost you about 40 bucks at your local Autozone or other automotive store. It will arguably give you about the same hp as a $140+ Cold Air Intake, which is 8-10hp, i think. That's usually people's first mod.

Aftermarket Camshafts are the best bang for your buck, running at around $200-250, i think. I'm not sure about the HP increase. It depends on other mods. After Camshafts, you'll wanna look at UDPs (Underdrive Pulleys), which are under $200.

Good luck!

Actually most of that is wrong. The air filter with no air silencer will give a similar gain as a CAI, but only like 2 HP if you're lucky. Not 8-10. That's rediculous.

Also, a camshaft isn't a good upgrade unless you have other mods to back it. You need ported heads and intake, and possibly a blower to see full potential. Also, if he's asking simple questions like that, I doubt he'd be installing himself. And cam install on a pushrod engine is a pain in the ***. You either take out the whole engine, or take out the radiator, fan, grill, and anything else in the way of the center of the block. Also, a cam that's not aggressive enough will suck if he plans on a blower. But if he gets a blower cam without a blower he'll totally lose low end torque. I don't know about price of the cam itself on a V6, but for a SOHC V8, they're about $550-$650 for two.

All in all, there's no cheap mod that gains a lot of power.

on my old 5.0 i took out the entire engine.. easier than removing a bunch of sh*t from the front.

the6 is a turd. (so is the 4.6) in terms of responding to mods.. if you guys could, id consider a 5.0 swap. its a pushrod with cheaper parts and alot more aftermarket options. i dont really hear alot about the aftermarker for the pushrod 6
