Default highway problems

my dad has a '98 mustang convertible, and whenever we get on the highway, the car can never top 60mph.i figure it has something to do with the speed limiter.the car is bone-stock and has never been needlessly tampered with.it is his daily driver and has about 73k miles on it.we got newit from a reputable dealer in tyler,TX.he has had it since i was 4,so it's pretty old.

Even a bone stock 98 will do a lot more than 60 mph. Maybe the gas pedal is hitting the floor mat or it needs adjusting.

The speed limiter isn't until 115 I believe ( possibly 120? correct me if im wrong). There is definitely something going on that isnt supposed to be. What happens when the car gets to 60? Does it die off? Does it just hang?

Is your gas pedal down all the way on the floor?

I have a '98 vert (3.8, auto) and I regularly go 70-75 on the tollway, and I only limit myself cause of the law on the other side of the hill. I know this thing will go faster.

your tranny could only be shifting in 3 gears, or less then what the amount of gears it has, you would probally feel that and it would be more noticable though

you wouldnt need to have the pedal all the way down to go 70mph...(to the guys who commented on the pedal). id agree with harford...i bet its the tranny.

If it was the tranny I don't think it would brake the car down like the limiter does. What else would trigger the limiter? Something to do with the convertible top? Maybe a sensor not picking up that it's closed or something?

true, he would just have the rps all the way up and he would be pushin it like crazy and it wouldnt go faster. i doubt its the top either though, the only sensor that does anything i think is the ebrake sensor. it wont let you put the top up or down unless the ebrake is pulled.
