Default How to "reset" computer for fast idle?

I have a 2000 v6 5 Speed with 50 K miles. No modifications and AC. The car wants to idle at 2500 rpm and is slow to drop in RPMs when shifting. The RPMs are always higher than they need to be for the shift.

It may return to around 1600 at a long stoplight. This has happened before and the dealer "reset" the computer. This will be the 3rd time it has happened. How does one "reset" the computer?

This dealer is always great and they always fix my Fords, 100 percent satisfied. It is just a hassle and I will have to pay for the "diagnostic" even though they look up my history and "Reset" the computer. I feel like I am paying for air.

The fix lasted about 8 months this last time and it has just started. They may not charge me , this time, but what is the deal?

Thanks

Clean your IAC. It's located on the back side of your upper intake, right past the throttle body. It looks like a silver sloenoid.
Here's a link to how to clean it,it's not for the 3.8 but you get the basic idea.

Just be sure to have a new gasket for the IAC for when you bolt it back on.

Well today I took off the Idle Control Solenoid and cleaned it, not too dirty, but maybe sticking? New gasket and test drove. It seemed to cut the problem in half. The problem of idling high came down to 1000RPMs from about 15-1600. I pulled the battery cables off and cleaned the terminals and left them off over an hour. So far the car is close to being normal with just a slightly slow drop in RPMs during an upshift, but it is not hanging there like it used too. I will take it and call this a good fix to my problem.

disconnecting the battery does nothing.

the IAC is getting too much flow.

a restrictor plate can help.

you can make one from a Coke can.

get a new IAC gasket for a template. cut a coke can to match the IAC gasket except for the holes. make the big hole about 1/2 the size of the gasket size hole. add alittle RTV Blue to both sides and put it under the IAC like a gasket.

problem solved
