Default Air bag replacement

No flames or suggestions about "take it to a pro." Let's face it - I am broke and need to do this myself so if you havent done it but want to chime in let me start by saying "thank you for your suggestion to take it to a pro..." and then you dont need to type anything....move along...move along....

I was in an accident last week and had the bags deploy in my 97 V6. Damage is repairable. I found replacement airbags. If there's ANYONE here who has done an airbag replacement and can tell me what the challenges/pitfalls are I really want to hear from you. I probably need to reset something so the new ones dont deploy, but never having done it I'd like to hear from someone who actually has.

Regards,
Earl

Before you do it get more info, dont rely on me for info

Need new sensors, i belive there are only 2??
Disconnect ground from battery
Air Bag Fuse (REMOVE)/SRS
4 Screws? hold in the airbag, torx bits.
Disconnect all wires for your airbag, horn..
Dont try to go around things under the dash, just take them out! Makes it easy(glovebox, plastics)
Be carefull when doing this because they can kill you/seriously injure you

Ive done it on a 04, should be the same. Both of them went off? It should of shut your fuel off also. DONT get caught throwing the airbag away. I think its like a $15,000 fine

Why do you only have REAR Springs?

+1, good tech info.
Also refer to your manual, it should touch a little on that.

The chin spoiler on the 06 was about 3.5-4" off the ground and putting the rears on actually changed the angle and brought that up slightly. However putting the front springs on would have made it impossible to get even in my driveway without scraping it to heck.

On your post...here's some questions....

Need new sensors, i belive there are only 2?? Sensors were located where? Under the bumper perhaps?
Disconnect ground from battery - No problem there. The friggin FD cut the negative battery cable at the accident.
Air Bag Fuse (REMOVE)/SRS - cool beans
4 Screws? hold in the airbag, torx bits. - yep
Disconnect all wires for your airbag, horn.. - excellent
Dont try to go around things under the dash, just take them out! Makes it easy(glovebox, plastics) - makes sense
Be carefull when doing this because they can kill you/seriously injure you - If the accident didnt kill me an airbag wont...KIDDING!! Yeah - I have reservations about doing this...

And there's no way I'll get caught throwing the airbag away...I have a BIG back yard and a nice shovel lol

First of all, you can't do this job by yourself. The Airbag module has to be tested, unless you just want a whole new one. The dealer is the only one that can test that module. It's located behind the dash on the tranny hump. Your crash sensors are in front of your condenser. When you disconnect the airbags, disconnect the battery first and wait 10 minutes before you touch anything in your SRS sytem.

Go buy BOTH a Haynes and a Chiltons repair manual.

I'll let you know if I even get the car back...insurance guy says he;s likely to total it and I have no idea how much they'll want if I try to buy it back.

you don't need a dealer, but you'll need a shop with the capability to reset/test the airbag module. you might try getting some of the stuff at a salvage yard where the bags did not go off.
