Default Muffler problem

Ok so I noticed today when I was at the drive through at Taco Bell that my car was making a sort of rattling sound like metal on metal, so when I got home I looked under at the exhaust, and immediately I noticed that the midpipe was not fully connected to the muffler, and it was offset a little so that exhaust could escape without going through the muffler. I actually kinda liked the sound difference, minus the rattling, and since I'm a little short on cash at the moment I was wondering if it would be bad for performance/sound if I removed the muffler completely. I live in Kansas, and they don't do any kind of emmissions tests here, but the extra sound might get me in trouble. What would you all do in my situation?

PS I am fairly new to the whole car modding thing, so try to be nice if i sounded retarded

Right now the muffler is off of my car, waiting to put a new one in.. due to some complications it's going to probably be another week or so before the new one gets put on. It sounds nice when it starts up, but it vibrates a lot when you're driving. I'm getting used to it but I don't want my car to be like this forever. It's also not as loud as I thought it would be, thankfully.

The only bad thing about running without the muffler (if the cats are there) is if the exhaust could be getting inside the car.
