Default V6 engine groaning

My fiance's 2004 3.8L V6 (40th Anniversy) mustang is making some groaning noises from the engine. This especially happens when the a/c is on. The noise often comes and goes (it is not always constant). Sounds possibly like a power steering pump. I am going to take it to ford here in a few days. I wanted to post this question to see if anyone else was having the same issue?

Thanks,

Marty

I had the same problem on my 94 man and it was a bad o2 sensor. That could be the problem..

o2's should get more than a year's usage i would think...

could you describe the "groan" by any chance? that's a broad term

It is the power steering pump. I took my 04 into the shop about it, they said it was normal. I think its just a noisy power steering pump. I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets real loud.

oh yeah dude that makes sense...like when you turn the wheel hard on some cars the belt will slow and make noise.

I'm going to take a different guess at this one. Because the radiator fan is electric and not driven off the belt train, the fan kicks in and out as needed when the car is idling. I'm not sure, but it might even be multi speed depending on temp and it's the high speed that sounds like a groaning sound. (Don't quote me on the multi speed).

I believe power steering pumps are typicaly loud on all Fords. Both my Ranger and Mustang have the p/s noise. I just kind of tune it out, but it does sound pretty annoying sometimes.
