Default Transmission Problem??

I think that there is a problem with my transmission, but I dont know for sure. It is an auto. I start my car and let it warm up for like 5 minutes. I hop in and put it in reverse and it goes in fine but when i put it in drive it takes 3-5 seconds to actually get into gear. After I have driven the car for awhile the problem goes away. Was just thinking that this only happens cause the transmission is cold. Dont really have the money to replace the transmission and this is car is my daily driver. Any info will be appreciated.

Change your fluid and filter if it hasn't been done in the last 20,000 miles. If you have changed it recently, make sure the fluid level is correct.

I have a similar problem going into reverse and the transmission was rebuilt not to long ago, also I have heard changing you tranny fluid and filter could cause more problems but I think the guy that told me that was full of sh*t. It's not that big of a deal since the car runs great so....

Supposedly, it's not good for it if you have like 75,000+ miles andflushit, not drain it, put a new filter on, and refill it. They claim if you flush a high mileage transmission, some parts that have aged might come loose and screw things up... again this is what I've heard. But with avg. city and some highway driving, the fluid breaks down at about 20,000 miles so it's a good idea to drain it:

1.) just take the pan off and old filter out
2.) go get a beer or whatever, let it drain for about 30 mins
3.) put the new filter in, put the pan back on (torque the bolts to about 11 ftlbs)
4.)fill it up about halfway, then start the car in park and continue filling to the approiate level
5.) move through each and every gear out in your driveway - with the brake on of course
6.)go drive around the neighborhood for about20 min, come back, re-check the fluid - add some if it needs it
7.) checkthe fluid level eachdayforabout3 days every time you drive it

* you can re-use the pan gasket
* you'll need 6 qts. of fluid (about 5 to fill it up and the leftover in the 6th to top it off

Maybe sounds kinda complicated for a newbie... but not that hard

Addinganother thing about flushing a tranny that has over 75k is the old parts in it. With today's lubricants that have all of the cleaners in them it is bad for some parts. When you flush the old tranny fluid that had no additives or cleaners in it and then proceed to add new fluid that has additives and cleaners in it this is bad for the parts inside. In one of my auto classes a guy brought his car in complaining about tranny problems after he had recently had it flushed. We took it apart and saw that the additives had started to 'eat' away at the inside of the tranny.

Long story short, it is not a good idea to flush it if it has over 100k. lol

No, you are supposed to change your autotranny fluid/oil and put in a new filter every 20,000 mi. Transmission fluid is just like motor oil, it breaks down, gets dirty, and no longer protects effectivelyaftera certain period of time.

Bottom line, you NEED to change your fluid and filter.

DO NOT flush the transmission though since yours is high mileage. Flushing involves draining the fluid, then forcing the rest of the fluid with a pressure systemout of the torque converter, and the internal parts of the transmission. This pressurized force can disrupt parts that have become used and more fragile (yet they still work fine if left alone). The addition totally new fluidand the pressurized manner in which the old fluid is taken outthan disrupts them. A flush removes ALL of the old fluid - with a drain/change, you are only taking out about half of the fluid - thus a drain/change is diluting the leftover old fluid with new fluid... kinda how a doctor gradually increases or decreases the dosage of medicine so it has no ill effects. Besides you can't flush your transmission at your house because chanches are you do not have aflushing machine. You normally have to take it to a shop to get a flush.

You need to simply change/drain your transmission (like the processI described).

***I also left out, than you should clean the old fluid out of the pan with some paint thiner, denatured alcohol,or something that cleans and evaporates easily. You will also have a magnetin the pan that collects tiny fragments of metal due to transmission use - clean it as well and get all the metal off. And if this is the first timeit has everbeen drained (and if have 115,000 mi. - be thankful you even have a tranny left), there will be a little white plastic dust plug in the pan. This was put in the tranny at the factory to keep dirt and sh*t out while it was being assembled. You do not need this plug, throw it any, hang it off your Christmas tree, whatever. It doesn't have to go back into the transmission pan. Again get6-7 quarts of fluid from the auto parts store and have fun.

Okay, I didnt really know the difference between a flush and a drain. Thanks for clearing it up. I gotta change my motor oil anyway so ill just change motor, trans and diff all at the same time.

Use Mercon V (5) fluid. Make sure you have a big drain pan, because draining the transmission can get rather messy. It might not totally fix your problem but it certainly won't hurt. Most important thing is to make extra sure you get the fluid level correct.
