Default Tranny fluid change

I've been burning up the search button reading about changing the ATF and it has left me really confused. Some people say you definitly need to change the fluid then others say changing it will just cause problems.. Right now my transmission has 99k on it and I don't know if it has ever been changed. It shifts fine for the most part but it can shift hard and slip a little bit every once in a while so I figure a fluid change might be in order. I plan to do it myself so I wouldn't be flushing it or anything just draining the pan and converter and replacing the filter. So, should I do it or no? If so what would be a decent brand fluid to use? I don't need some $100 a quart best AT fluid in the world stuff just something good. The only mercon/dextron3 stuff I saw here locally was Pennzoil. Is that any good? Thanks for the help.

I don't think that changing the trans fluid will hurt anything. Just make sure to change the filter and put the cover back on slowly and carefully.
