Default ABS Control Module

Has anyone had to replace their ABS control Module? I have a 97 V-6 44K miles. The repair shop says it will cost me $800. Yikes!

Thanks,
Ms. Mick

My ABS Light came on in my car. That's the only symptom.

Get a second opinion. I'll research too. It could be just an electrical malfunction if the car stops fine. I wish I could be more help, but I've never had to replace an ABS module on any car I've owned.

Well inorder to figure out the problem you will need an abs scan tool which is pretty expensive so you'll definitally have to take it to a shop.

If it is the control module you won't be able to replace it yourself even though it is quite simple and it doesn't take that long. To replace the abs control module on 93 thunderbird I did, I think it was in the trunk or fenderwell. I just had to disconnect it from its braket and it had a connecter hooking it to the abs harness. I just disconnected the harness and hooked the new one up. I had to use the scan tool to reconfigure the new controller and make sure everything was working right. Man I got good money for doing that too, I think 8 hours labor for 2 hours of work.

Zach -

Yes, I have already had my car scanned. The repair shop said it was $741 + labor and would take about an hour.

I'm taking it to another repair shop tomorrow to get a 2nd opinion. They charge $40 to scan.
I can't believe that at 44,000 miles this very expensive piece of equipment on this car has taken a dump. I guess I'll try a foreign car next time.

BTW, I could never do this job myself. I'm a girl and I'll admit I just ain't mechanically inclined.

It does sound odd that the abs control module would go out at 45,000 miles. This isn't a common problem, I would think that the a physical part of the abs system would go out before the control module. I wouldn't tell the next shop you take it too what the other shop diagnosed the problem as. People are taken advantage of all the time for things they don't need, it could just be some simple problem that could be fixed easily without replacing the control module.

I took the car in this morning for another scan. The mechanic scanned it twice and he said both times a code 061 came up. He said there was no such code number which led him to also believe it was the computer module. He said another indication that its the computer module is that the ABS Light comes on immediately when I start the car.

He said I should check and see if Ford issued any recalls. I haven't found anything yet.

Ford definitly hasn't issued any recalls on the mustang in a while. I checked all data and it isn't listed as a common problem. Code 061 isn't a real code so I guess your abs module is on the fritz. Codes start at 100 and the abs codes are in the 1000's so this sounds right. We have the part listed at 1000 something dollars and 3 hours labor so it sounds like the first shop was giving you a deal.
