Default CEL P0340

Camshaft Position Censor

Came on while my dad was driving my car this weekend. The car runs fine except when RPM are over 4,000 it makes a loud squeaking noise that doesn't stop till RPMs are around 1k. I know this code includes just about everything that can go wrong, but I'm thinking it has something to do with the T-pulley and something locking up.

Everything I've found through searching has been about power loss etc. The car still runs fine just it is squeaking at higher RPMS. Any ideas? I don't think it has anything to do with wiring/sensors.

Used to, I replaced the bearing on the idler pulley and it stopped. A brand new S-Belt was put on about a month ago.

That squeek is the camshaft synchroniser vane rubbing on the CMPsensor, it's a known failure on these engines, although not too common.. Get another from a junk yard & get it installed since it needs to be correctly timed. You could do it yourself but there is an installaion tool which makes the job a lot easier.

Alright thanks a lot Steve. Probally gonna get this professionally done since I'm at school. I haven't heard of a shop installing a junk yard part so do you know about what this will cost me for parts/labor?

What you could do is this, install the synchroniser yourself & then take it to the shop to get it timed. It's a one bolt & an electrical plug to disconnect the old unit. Install the replacement in the same position as the old one (close as you can) make some marks on the top of the engine block & the synchro housing. Then get a ford shop or someone who knows this engine to time it.

Hers a link if you decide to do it yourself

Not too difficult if your handy with engines or have shop class to do it in.

Alright thanks a lot again, I think I'll have my dad look into finding the part for me. Meanwhile I'll call ford and get a quote to see what would be my best way of going about it. Car's fine just sitting in my garage but needs to be done before I get outta school in May.
