Default White gauge installation problem!

This link (step #10)says I can attach the wires directly to the headlight switch, and thats what I want to do!

http://www.americanmuscle.com/mustan...es-how-to.html

However, mine gauge came with its own switch. Now I want to cut the wires and attach them like I said before. Should I cut them and where? Should I cut before the littleblack box (where the switch is coming from)? Here is the pic:

This can be done one of two ways. You can cut off the switch and wire it in that way or wire it in with the switch attached. If you want to keep the switch just make sure its in the "on" position and then tuck it into the dash. If you choose to cut it off the inportant thing to remember is that Red=+ Black=- as long as those two things are hooked up correctly then you will be fine. BTW I think that switch isn't a power, it is a dimmer. If that is the case you may want to keep it on there. just try and mount it in a place out of sight. You can run the cord down the seperations in the pannels around the steering wheel. They will fit through, then double-sided tape it down by your fuse box. Then you will have an active dimmer. I don't know if the OEM one will work.

Should I only have one wire on the gauge, like on the picture? Also how do you attach the red wire with the grey one on the main headlight switch?

It looks from the picture that that wire has a plug on it. I bet the plug goes into the box that contains the dimmer. If so that makes doing away with the switch a little tricky. I bet that the wire running from the cluster(gauges) to the dimmer is not just one but two wires wraped togeather. If you want to do away with the plug you are going to need to cut the plug off and peel back the sheath to find the positive and negative wires. For someone that does not know about wireing and electronics this is NOT recomended. I think you need to hook it up the same way that it says in the instructions.

http://www.americanmuscle.com/mustan...es-how-to.html

Is easy enough to follow.

A few pointers:

If you decide to connect to the headlight control wire, soldering is the best option for attaching the wire. If that is not an option it is REALLY IMPORTANT to make sure you get the right wire and make sure you have a good connection. This means that once the wire is attached it won't fall off. You don't want the lights on your gauges going off at night on the freeway. Also remember that once you have the connection it is importand to wrap the connector(where youattached the wire) with electric tape. you do not want positive and ground wires to touch.

Next the instructions say to find a "good chassis ground" this is also important. a ground is going to be any steel part of the car attached to the body or the frame.

Last but not least! ANYTIME you do anything to the wires or electronics of you car MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. Crossed wires or shorts on a live batterycan spell death to a cars electronics.

Just rememberthe old addage,"Messure twice, cut once." make sure all of it is going to fit before you cut/saw/splice and then make sure all of it is wired securely and wraped before you reattach the battery.

*sorry for the grammer, its been a long day. If you have any more questions feel free to PM me.

thanks man that was very helpfull. However, I think I'll have somebody else conect the wires for me. The electronics are not my fav so I wouldn't mess with that!

This is an easy mod to do, I make it sound harder then it is. Alothough electronics ARE my thing. I could hot wire a nuke but can't change a starter... go figure. Good thing for me cars are becomeing more like computers. Maybe one day soon I'll know how one works... lol =P
