Default Forged pistons or new short block?

I spoke with the shop rebuilding my engine today about the parts. They told me the pistons they ordered still havent came in yet, so they started looking into short and long block engine kits. The guy tells me this may be cheaper than getting the pistons and tearing the old motor apart.

There waiting to get a call back and price from the guys that sell short/long blcok engine kits.

Which route should I go? It seems to me like a short block or complete engine may cost more.

Im starting to get impatient as the shop has had the car a month now and theyre telling me nothing has been done yet b/c they cant get the pistons. So they are thinking about just buying a motor already built with the goodies and throwing it in. Wouldnt that cost more? What the hell.

I would buy a forged shortblock from www.supersixmotorsports.com so you only have to take 1/2 the motor apart. Of course they also sell the pistions, rods, and crank that you want. Their off the shelf rotating assembly kits are very complete and you can rest assured you are getting the right parts the first time.

I agree.

Forged pistons are good, but the next thing to let go would be your rods so if you are planning on replacing the pistons I would at least do the rods as well, if not the crank too. SSM has a bad *** 4.3L conversion if you really wanted to build your car, you've got to replace the oil pan and other random parts so they quote about $2300 for the whole kit. Is it worth it? Depends on how much power you want and how deep your pockets are. Just my 2cents.

No need for forged guts unless you are going to use a power adder.
However, I can't see why a short or long block would cost less than just pistons (since pistons would be included in the cost of a new short/long block)??????

The 4.3 stroker would be nice. But I dont have the money for that and I sorta want to keep it true to the 3.8 v6 theme.

But I do want to replace the rotating assembly. From the crank, rods, to the pistons. And Im getting the heads ported and polished. Ill let them know about supersix motorsports tomorrow.

Ok. Im looking at their long rod 3.8 rotating assembly kit. It has seasoned crank, SCAT forged 351/408w stroker H-beam long rods, ARP rod bolts, Wiseco forged pistons, rings, pins, and lox. Its $1650. What do you guys think of that?

I plan to tell to the guys at the shop tomorrow this is what I want to get. What are the chances they will? As Im sure they have their own parts suppliers/brands that they get dealer discounts on. So will they say yes to this or stick to what they want???

Question: Will the longer rod raise my compression too high for my procharger??? What bore should I get, 3.830 or 3.860(think this is stock)? And what compression should I go with 8.7:1 or 9.4:1? Im boosted, so will dish pistons with 9.4:1 compression and 351/408w stroker long rods be safe?

Thinks guys. Need your advice on this. Please answer^.

The shop will install the SSM set up if you tell them to. It's a good set up for the price.

The shop tells me my stock crank is fine and to just get the pistons and rods. Im getting the dished pistons with 8.7:1 compression. I think Ill be fine keeping the old crank and only getting forged rods and pistons. But if you know other wise, please tell me. The stock crank is forged isnt it?
