What muffler is best...
I have a 1996 v6 mustang and I'm wanting to get a new muffler for it. I want a muffler with the best sound and rumble. I'm starting off small and adding the muffler 'til I get more money to change out the whole exhaust system so please let me know which muffler I should get.
your going to get a different answer depending on who is on when you ask...
im running flowmaster 40s with an X.. i have ceramic long tubes i haven't installed yet.. but i would recommend the flowmasters.. then again there are going to be others that are going to tell you flows sound like crap (as if their setup is the only way to go)... so your never going to get a straight answer...

if your only gonna run 1 muffler on a stock single exhaust then i would run either a Moroso Spiral flow muffler or a cherry bomb extereme single chamber both in 2.5" and adapters from the 2" single exh would need made to mate the 2.5" mufflers to the stock 2" exhaust. Force is no longer making mufflers and i don't think anything else. sad as they were a great sounding muffler. however the Thrush 2 chamber mufflers are similar and are like a flowmaster 40 but less than half the price at $30/muffler. the Moroso and Cherrybomb extreme are around $50/muffler. both much less than $70 for a flow 40 that won't sound any better than the 3 i mentioned. as for loudness the moroso has it then the cherry bomb extreme and the thrush 2 chamber will sound identical to the flow 40.
also a good cheap muffler is just a glasspack on the single exhaust. most will say no but the say magnapacks will sound good when in reality they are basically the same damn thing

I am running dual flowmaster 40s with long tubes and a H-pipe with 2 1/2inch pipe. Sounds bad @$$ from idle -2500 RPMs. After that, it starts getting high pitch and looses the rumble.
I know a guy that had a 3.8 camaro with a Y-pipe that went into 2 1/2in pipe to a cherry bomb that sounded so much like a v8 that I thought it was one until he reved it and I herd it idle back down.
I go to school with a guy that has a 3.8 Ranger with dual exhaust and no cats with flow 40s and an X-pipe, I DO NOT ADVISE THIS BECAUSE IT SOUNDS HORRIBLE!!!

For a sinlge muffler look at Cobra's post, but you're probably not going to get the sound you want, to get that sound you have to go dual.
I'm not a fan of Flowmaster, however for a stock sixer they're close to the best sound you'll get. I'm more of a fan of Magnaflow on an O/R H pipe set up on a sixer, but again, Mags, like flows, don't appeal to everybody.

I would run straight headers, no need for exhaust. I'm kidding, for sixxers, flow 40's are the best sounding, IMO, and I'm not a flowmaster fan AT ALL. If you have emissions like I do, just do a catback system with your choice of muffler. GL
