I just bought a 2000 mustang for my wife, and i noticed a very irritating whinning noise when it is just sitting still and while driving it. I bought it from a used car dealership and the guy said that it is just the power steering pump... he claims that they make an awful lot of noise to begin with. Is this true. It seems to get louder as you drive it, which would make sense because the belts are turning faster. Should i replace the power steering pump? Is it going bad? The last thing i need is for my wife to be driving it and it go bad on her while she is driving it.......

 

Yea they are notorious for making a racket drain the fluid and put new in it it may or may not help it did help mine I highly doubty its goin bad unless its absolutly yelling. The older exploders have the same problem

 

Mine does it too. I usually just let the stereo put it into the background. It certainly isn't a great sound either.

 

No need to replace it. It is common and most v6's have the ps whine
