Here is what I am going to do. I am going to do the split port swap and here is why. Im 19 and in college so I can relate. But the reason for my choice is because I can gain 40hp with head and intake swap and it is about the same gain you would get from an eaton m90 off of a supercoupe. They are both a little bit of a pain, but in the long run, the split port is the best way to go because you can go to the m112 cobra blower and make 150 hp total. I would start by buying the upper and lower intake, 99-04 fuel injectors, fuel rail (98 uses different style from split port. I think 98 is return style, I will check.) the heads from a split port v6, The bottom end of a 4.2 L v6 from an f-150 and the crank from it as well, If you get this from a junk yard, you may be able to buy the full f-150 engine and do the swap from just that engine. I know you can probably but the full motor for 500 or less from a junk yard. Since the parts are off the car and are going to be disassembled, I would have them ported and polished. This is going to take a week at least to put it all together if you have some kind of mechanical skills. After the swap you will need a tune. The bottom end and crank are not needed, but if you are going to take the engine apart, why not increase the size from 3.8 to 4.2?
If I left off any parts let me know.

This won't be to hard on the pockets dollar for hp wise if go to the right places and don't mind going to a junk yard for parts. If you are some one who likes NEW everything then it will get pricey quick.

the m90 swap will actually be the "smarter" way to go, and this is coming from someone who has done a split-port swap.

And you won't gain just 40hp, due to the fact that the 'stang has a slightly higher compression ratio T-bird SC=8.2:1 and the 'stang 3.8L=9.0:1.

And what a lot of people tend to overlook is the HUGE gain in torque. the single-port stock only makes 215 ft.lbs. but the m90 equipped supercoupes make 315 ft.lbs. which is only like 13 ft.lbs. short of the 3v 4.6L's output. and remember you'll actually be making MORE power than a stock T-bird SC.

Just food for thought.

P.S. there's actually a lot more support for power growth in the M90 than most realize:

you know, I never thought about that. The tq is what you need to be fast, hp is to keep you there. The reason I am doing it the way I am is because I plan on doing the m112.

My advice (from someone with more than looks mods), keep your car the way it is in the power department.
1) Start with better brakes (13" solid disc, Cobra/Mach 1 dual piston calipers up front).

2) Upgraded shocks, struts and springs for a better stance and more of a feel for the car.

3) A posi unit or a T Lok rear end and 3.73 gears.

4) Dual exhaust. Y pipe back, pic the mufflers you like the sound of the best.

Then drive it for two years just like that. Learn the car, learn the roads, learn yourself.

I started racing carts two years before I drove a car. I had my first car at 14 (it was legal in ND back when I was that young). At 17 I thought I could drive the pants of anything. At 21 I laughed at how much I didn't know when I was 17. At 27 I laughed at my 'racing abilities' as a 21 year old. Mind you by then I had built and raced over half a dozen Mustangs, and was designing most of my own parts to make them better than the aftermarket had to offer.

I'm 30 now. Imagine what I'll laugh at in 4 or 5 more years.

Don't jump off the deep end. Wade in, test the water, learn to swim from someone that can already swim well. Then grow slowly. A wider base makes a better foundation.

I see you keep saying that. What V8 did you use? The worn out 5.0L that makes about what a newer V6 makes?

A V8 swap? What motor? Model of motor? Into what year? The only V8 swap I would do is a Mach/Cobra motor. They are good motors. Any 2v 4.6L or 5.0L, I don't think so... Well, I guess if I had the car, the engine/tranny/wiring, and all the other odd and ends that I would need for free then I might consider it, but I would not spend money on that swap. lol
