would anybody use that type of oil on their cars i know ford recomends 5w 20 but is there any advantages on running a thicker oil weigth i live in northern california so weather is not a problem just wondering because my oil pump seems to be whining and my valves and lifters are really loud at start up and at 1500 rpms 2002 auto with 88000

0w40 is going to be thinner than 5w20 at startup when youre having your problems.... the first number is viscousity at start up, and the second is viscousity after its warmed up...at start up you would be running 0w instead of 5w, and at operating temp you would be running 40 instead of 20...

i wouldnt do that if it was my car...if you wanted a thicker oil, 10w30 would be your best bet... whether or not it will help quiet things down though, i do not know

How do you know the oil pump is whining? That would be extremely unusual. It might be the noise you are hearing is coming from something else. What type/viscosity of oil is the vehicle currently using?

If the engine is running rough and making noises, there might be something else going on. Have you diagnosed any of this yet?

A thicker oil will flow at a slower rate, reducing lubrication, increasing engine temperatures, increase engine wear, reduce power and also fuel economy.

Are there any other symptoms? How long has this noise been occurring? Has the oil pressure in the engine been checked?
