Default 2001,2004 block

ok I'v been looking for a 01 to 04 3.8 block. I have looked at two motors that were out of the car, with no car in sight. How's the best way to determine the year? Is there something that gives you a clue right away?

Thanks for any help.

99-early 00 where externally balanced. Late 00-04 were interally. 01+ have the runner controls in the lower intake, the controller for it is located on the back of the intake by the firewall.

Unless you can see the motor run in the car that its being picked from with the odometer reading, never take the salvage yards word for the miles and the year it is from.
