Check your transmission fluid level. I had a problem once with my 3.8 auto trans. It would shift hard sometimes. Took it to a trusted tranny mechanic and he told me just to change the fluid including the fluid in the torq converter which is pretty easy and the filter. Mine ran fine after that. But if your trans fliud is even a quart low it cause it to do some funny things. Make sure it's running and warm when you check it.

Yes check the fluid levels. When was the last time (if ever) that the fluid and filter was changed?

yeah if you haven't done anything with the trans fluid with that many miles then it would be a good place to start
