is there anyway of telling for sure what needs to be replaced, also how do i replace the pins, do they just swap out or how does it work? i don't want it to be more trouble than its worth considering that the hinges both upper and lower can be bought for about 80 for the pair from southwestford, so if its going to be more trouble than its worth ill just replace them, but if anyone could shed some light on the subject it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You cut out the old pins, insert the new ones and secure them with a cotter pin, very easy to do, the pins are very cheap ($7)

It could also be that it just needs a little bit of lube. White Lithium Grease is the best for this, in my opinion.

^^^this would be the first thing I would try as it doesnt require spending any money, and its the easiest thing to do.

If it drops, try to find where the up/down movement is happening. If its happening at the hinge joint, then you need new pins and bushings. If the entire hinge moves, then you may just need to tighten it up a bit. Good luck...
