Shop installation incorrect? Misdiagnosis?

yeah thats what i was thinking at first. if he is a family friend mechanic then hes probably just dumb lol

Went back and reread your first post. Every engine Ive pulled apart and rebuilt, there is a crankshaft behind the harmonic balancer not a balance shaft as your "mechanic" told you. You may want to look for a new mechanic as I would be questioning this guys skills.

Yeah he printed me out an engine diagram and everything and showed me the balance shaft sleeve connected to the HB, then it hit me the other day that I should check into it myself and looked for pics online, it looked totally different. So I asked ford for an engine diagram and I immediately recognized the part, and it sit above the crankshaft, and they said it would take an INCREDIBLE amount of force to damage or crack that piece.

If the gear broke the car wouldn't run. :P
All that shrapnel and slop would gaul and jams things up damn near instantly.
If you look at some engine build pics you will see how the shaft is driven, a failure in those parts would not be a good thing.
When I offered to buy your car I just figured I would replace the motor ($5oo or so) and take the other one apart to see what was up with the vibration and rebuild it as a 4.2L
I felt that it was probably something more serious because I was considering the obvious cause to be fixed (Dampener) but if they sent you the wrong one then of course that would be the problem. :P
If this still doesnt fix you problem, just let me know and we can try to work something out.

Thanks man I will let you know! And yes I'm pretty sure (for the most part) that its just the harmonic balancer because before I replaced it the car shook noticeably but when the new one was installed it was bad enough that it shook the snow off my car. So I'm thinking the correct balancer will have it running good again (hopefully!) If not then I'm more than happy to work out a deal with you
