If you have the cash, you can do something similar to what was mentioned above by going to some place like mustangsunlimited.com, stangmods.com, efimustangparts.com and pick out a set of mid pipes, mufflers, and tailpipes.
Or you can purchase two mufflers, and a set of 99-04 GT tailpipes and take those to a real repair shop that welds and have them put it on for you. You can go to YouTube and listen to the different mufflers until you hear what you want your car to be. Some tried, true and tested options are Flowmaster 40 OR 44, Thrush Welded, Borla, MAC, and my personal favorite for the V6 Mustang is the Cherry Bomb "Pro" or "Extreme" which are both chambered.
Any questions, just ask. Someone here will set you straight.
I told you what to get, where to get it. A set of mufflers 2.5" offset, a set of 99-04GT tailpipes.

Please don't post silly suggestions to someone looking for help. Longtube headers might give you 5 horsepower. That's ridiculous to say stupid sh** like that. Look at yesterdays postings regarding the SCT dyno tune. Look at the work put into that car to get marginal HP increases like that.

Holy crap it's S197 tech at it's finest. This is 100% incorrect for the situation the OP is looking for.

If your looking for the ultimate in performance and sound, then duals are the way to go.
True generally - but to gain the best for the money, you need to go with at least a Y pipe back set up on the 3.8L motor. The sound will NOT change that much from a single muffler swapped onto the stock pipe.

uh no? 99-04s should be 2.5" pipeing, and no keeping a stock 2.25" single exhaust and just changing out the muffler isnt going to do ****. and shaun its 4 mph in the trap speed not 4 seconds in trap speed. and dont forget i had a full tune up on the car done on a 90k mile car so that probably helped a little bit as well

http://www.stangmods.com/ has everything i had on my exhaust and are a site sponsor so they will take care of you

I would like to do this for under 1k if its possible. I have more but I think over 1k probably wouldn't be worth the investment. It sounds like I need some long tube headers but all of the one I can find are only for GTs.

my whole exhaust was about 1k, but i had new cats, new o2 sensors, new manifold gaskets etc, basically Whoever owns the car now will never have to worry about the exhaust again

You can find used longtubes for about half price too if you want to go that route. I got mine for like $170 shipped I can't remember exactly, couple dings and scratches but no leaks or anything affecting performance.
