Default Shifting problems after replacing range sensor

Hello! I got this car with a blown head gasket. swapped motors. and had shifting problems. original tranny wouldn't shift into 2nd unless you put the shifter in the #2 slot and back in drive, and would be fine until you put it back in park. and it got worse. ad worse. Swapped transmissions. Was working perfectly. But would not start in park, only nuetral, it drove perfect though. replaced transmission range sensor (aka nuetral safety switch) and it still only started in Nuetral, but still drove fine. made another adjustment to it and it started in park fine. and seemed to drive fine, until getting on the freeway wouldn't go into 3rd (very scary when between two semi trucks).

I took it to aamco, and they claim my tranny needs a rebuild. How is that? it was working perfectly fine, until it starts in park fine. another detail that might help is, they say it slips into 3rd. and on my way back home (only took back roads and country roads at 40mph) it seemed to go into 3rd fine
so i drove at 55mph fine now, but when i came to a stop sign. My engine shut off as i was coming to a stop. and when i put it in park and tried to start it back up. and it cranked fine. But wouldn't start. so i pushed it to a side street. (i was only 1 mile from home too!!) and after i called for help, i tried starting it in nuetral before walking home. and it started up and drove home fine. when i got home, i started it in park and worked fine. and now it appears 3rd is working, but 4th is slipping.

Default EDIT:

oh! the check engine light is on, and 1 code is for the transmission range sensor (P0708 - transmission range sensor high input) and P0720 speed output sensor circuit fault) aamco guy said the speed sensor was unplugged. and he plugged it back in. my speedometer was still working though. 2 codes for engine running lean. P1405 DPFE hose plugged/off. and they told me there were 6 codes. but only gave me 5. maybe they just cant count?
