Default Correct running temp

Hi
I suspect I am running too cool in my 89 4-cyl. The temp gauge never reads higher than level with the L in NORMAL, and for the first hour or so of driving it doesn't even creep up that far. Of course, I suspect the thermostat, but I'd like to know what the correct gauge reading should be.

When I used to own a jaguar, we pretty much had to rely on a good stat from WIX to get the Jag to its proper temp consistently. I'm wondering if there is the same sort of deal like this with a stang?
Thanks
Phil

I was always told "So long as the temp is somewhere in the normal range". Actually, the temp should be above 180 degrees. For proper emissions related temp, the t-stat should be 192-195. Does this clear it up?? LOL

Hi
Yes, it clears it up. Running under temp looks like a good idea, but it isn't. Now, the question is, what make of stat is known to be reliable for 190 degree operation for this application and where to get one.
Thanks
Phil

any hardware store will have one. The stock ones are about 192 degrees I believe.

For my setup I use a 180 degree but thats b/c of the engine needing to be cooled way more with a blower

Stant is most prolific manufacturer. I prefer thier Super Stat. It's more reliable. You should be able to pick one up at your local parts house.
