As for tires, tire shops have to pay to recycle tires that will no longer pass inspection meaning they can't sell them as used, most places would be happy to just give them away if you ask, as long as they hold air you can drift on them. Find a bunch of steelies that will fit whatever car you get and have the tires mounted, then when you kill a tire just swap it out and keep sliding!
This is what you want for burnout contests but for actual drifting you need good quality tires. If you start drifting on some super bald tires you're asking for a blowout, while you're sideways at 60+ mph.

If he's just practicing he doesn't need to be spending 4-600 dollars a week on tires, and he doesn't have to be going 60+ to drift. He's gonna have a blow out eventually with good tires anyways, might as well learn how to control a blowout situation with cheap stuff so you don't tear up expensive parts.

I see your point there, I dunno if it were me I would be scared to drift on bald tires. Plus in order to maintain control of the slide you need tires that will grip when they're good and hot.

I suppose this is why I never tried it, I'll stick to getting sideways every once in a while and call it a day.

You don't want pure crap tires. I wouldn't start on anything less than 50% tread.

Just so everyone knows I am a girl! But yeah thanks for the advice everyone, it really would be awesome to be able to make a career out of this. I think before I really get into practicing it myself and spending a lot of my own money on it I am going to see what's around my area and volunteer. Just so that I can learn a little bit of the lingo before I really get myself seriously involved. Maybe even see about going to a couple Formula D events this year. But thanks again! Anyone know of any events up here?

Actually that's not a bad idea I know they have some of that around here along with some rally and rally cross. I could start out with that to establish myself and maybe move to drifting later on when I have more sufficient funds.

Road course is where it's at. I gave up drag for it. Much more fun.
