1996 Mustang Brake Power Booster Replacement
The easiest way to gain access to the power booster without removing the master cylinder.
Remove driver's seat for easy access under the dash. (Don't forget the electric seat motor plug if you have them)
Remove cotter pin on brake pedal linkage. (Pull back, use vise grips)
Remove nylon washer on pedal linkage.
Slide brake light switch and plastic sleeve off the brake pedal linkage pin.
Unclip shift interlock switch from brake pedal arm. (For automatics, it's white plastic)
Remove 4 power booster nuts from the interior firewall. (You'll need a swivel for the top two)
Loosen the pedal assembly with one 10mm bolt in a slotted hole. (The only one on the pedal bracket)
Remove two master cylinder nuts. (Easy access with 6in extension and deep socket)
Remove master cylinder level sensor plug. (Only plug on the master cylinder)
Pull master cylinder out of the power booster. (The aluminum brake lines will flex enough for you to do this)
Remove vacuum hose from the power booster. (Only hose attached to power booster)
Pull up and out on the power booster to clear the shock tower. (This may take a bit, not much clearance)
Make sure the rubber dust boot is removed with the booster.
To install, reverse order. Should take 2 hours or less.
