Default Down shifting problem...

today when I was going around 45-50 in 4th gear I went to downshift to 3rd because a light was coming up and I pushed the clutch in around 1700rpm's still in 4th and down shifted into 3rd and when I did the rpm's just went dead and stood around 1000-1200 rpm's and acted like it was in neutral. I was trying to go into 3rd doing around 37-40mph and it just did nothing. It def. did not do what it does downshifting from 3rd to 2nd where it jerks a little and then slows down.....whats the deal here???

P.S.
When I downshift from 3rd to 2nd I downshift around 1700rpm's also with no problem. Also driving a 99' 5spd stang low miles.

personally when im approaching a stop light, and stopping is imminent, i just let my stang roll on neutral and brake accordingly, in some instances when im approaching a red light on neutral and it turns green, depending on my speed i shift to the best gear, so theres no jerking. not sure if it will help.

Well I used to do that too with no problems until my buddy brought to my attention how bad it is for the brakes with all that weight being stopped. And I said well a Automatic does that....but they dont (I dont think) even though there Auto they downshift.

they downshift below 1000 rpm, so they are useless for compression breaking

Its not bad on the brakes, what is bad on the brakes is riding them but if you have a manual then you prolly wont be doing that and instead you will be riding the clutch... but no its not bad on the brakes at all to just use them to stop you.

And by the way, I shift into neutral and brake when stopping for a stop light. I dont downshift very often when stopping.
