I've been working on car cars, mostly BMWs, for a few years now. I just bought this car from my brother and this is the first time i've ever worked on a mustang. I've done all the general maintenance on this car and service engine light just came on. Is it possible to reset the light without having to take it to the dealer? Thanks in advance. I look forward to being an active member on the board and bringing a little bit of knowledge to the table.
Is it the SERVICE ENGINE LITE, or the CHECK ENGINE LITE? the service lite you can ignore. It comes on at certain intervals, like when Ford wants you to change the O2 sensors as part of the maintenance. If it's the CEL, get it hooked up to a scanner, read the codes, and let us know. Maybe we can point you in the right direction. If you don't have a code reader, Autozone, PepBoys, Kragen, Schucks, Checker, and some others offer the service for free.

BTW, what year is it? If it has OBDll, a code reader is necessary to reset any codes.
LIGHT? I think you've been drinking too much Bud Lite!
^^tastes like cat pist

so what year is the car you still havent told us?

Thanks for all the great replies. It is the "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light. I drove about 300 miles yesterday and it turned off and on, but has now remained off for the past ~50 miles.
Specs are it's a 2000 with ~116K on the clock. My brother used it to travel as his company car hence the miles, but well maintained. Since I got this is what i've done:

Switched to synthetic
MAC CAI
Pulleys
Replaced Plugs
Replaced Wires to JBA
Fuel filter
Starter
Optima Red Top
Installed Updated Valve Cover and PCV
Flushed Radiator
Differential Fluid

*Next I'm going to work on suspension and brakes. Sport shocks and lowering springs with bigger sway bars. I'm thinking about Cobra replicas and +1 tires. As far as audio, it already has the Mach 460 system. I just added a JL 500/1 and 10W3v2 to fill in the bass. I'm not so sure if it's worth doing all the extra work because I might sell it, so no need for the performance upgrades.

its most likely the o2 sensors, or something to do with the cats.

Hi - I'm new here too. I've had this problem in the past and it sounds like (from your follow-up message) that you read the manual because it mentions driving something like 300 miles in one stretch to eliminate the problem. My light kept coming on and I began to notice the conditions in which this happened.
a) it was raining
b) going up a hill
c) shifting/accelerating while going up a hill

The few times my light has come on this has been the condition. Driving 300 miles - per the user manual - has always turned the light off. I don't know what this means ... is it oxygen sensor related? Why does it only happen during rainy times? Sorry to jump in the middle of your thread
