Service Engine Light
I've been working on car cars, mostly BMWs, for a few years now. I just bought this car from my brother and this is the first time i've ever worked on a mustang. I've done all the general maintenance on this car and service engine light just came on. Is it possible to reset the light without having to take it to the dealer? Thanks in advance. I look forward to being an active member on the board and bringing a little bit of knowledge to the table.

BTW, what year is it? If it has OBDll, a code reader is necessary to reset any codes.
Just disconnect the terminal from the battery for a few minutes. The check engine light always use to come on in my old car (99' Durango) and this always turned it off. And yes nothing was actually wrong...a switch that was located on the rear end had to be replaced because that stupid like $20 switch always turned the light on. I also had it on a computer to make sure nothing was wrong so you should probly do that first before assuming nothing is wrong.

i had my service engine light come on about 3 times in a row, and when i finally disconnected it for the 3rd time it has yet to come on in about 1 month and a half, knock on wood.

Is it the SERVICE ENGINE LITE, or the CHECK ENGINE LITE? the service lite you can ignore. It comes on at certain intervals, like when Ford wants you to change the O2 sensors as part of the maintenance. If it's the CEL, get it hooked up to a scanner, read the codes, and let us know. Maybe we can point you in the right direction. If you don't have a code reader, Autozone, PepBoys, Kragen, Schucks, Checker, and some others offer the service for free.
