Default backfiring?

well as you prob know I just got an Xcal, now my car backfires (I think). Its not that loud, more like a sputter or something...kinda like "vroom vroom vroom pffft vroom vrooom vroom". Seems to mainly happen in the lower rpms...like around 1000 or so. If it happens at higher rpms I don't notice it. Mostly if I rev up the engine and on the way back down it does it a little. At first I though it was cuz I didn't have enough premium in my tank, but now I should have about 90% premium (91). Any ideas?

reinstall factory tune and see if it goes away. if it does, contact your tuner and bitch him out. or convince him to get you a new tune.

Should of gotten Magnaflows, my stock exhaust used to backfire in the upper rpms, but with my duals, she never, not once, has backfired, you may of mistuned something, but I'm willing to bet its the mufflers.

Thought backfiring was all engine, not mufflers...?
But yeah, think I'll contact the tuner guy.

Well its a combination of the two, as I understand it. Backfire occurs, I think, when you have either an excessive build up of air in your pipes, due to either the cats restricting air flow or the mufflers, and when the air is finally released, there is a small void of air, which inturn creats backfire when the next boost of air is released. Like I said this is how I understand it to occur, so I may be wrong in my explanation, but I do know I has something to do with airflow in your pipes, well unless your timing in your engine is off, then that could also cause the problem.

Ok, I put my stock programming back on and there seems to be no more backfiring or whatever it was.

I'm under the impression that backfiring occurs when you have unburned fuel getting into your exhaust and it burns in the exhaust instead of the motor.

Can it be mistaken for pre-detonation (low octane)? I always though backfiring was REALLY loud, too...like a gun going off. My car's noise was pretty quiet...just like a sputter.

it could be low octane, but you said you already put premium, right?

a backfire is loud, like a really small gun (or a really big cap gun). maybe you are getting pinging. if it's coming from the motor, it's not backfiring... backfiring happens in the exhaust.
