Default possible gears problem?

ok.. let me explain what is going on. When driving below 50mph everything is fine and it all sounds normal.. once i hit 50 i start hearing a loud whining noise coming from the rear end... and it gets louder and louder the faster i go.. but if i take my foot off the gas the noise stops... starts again if i even tap the gas pedal. Could it be my gears wearing out or what else could it be? I'm planning on replacing my gears anyways in the next month or two so if it is them then good. If you can help me out with this it would be appreciated. thanks

Could also be a u-joint. If the grease has evacuated, the bearings dry up, and grind.

could be a rear axle bearing going bad, or it could be that the bearings in the rear are going bad causing a poor mesh at higher speeds. it is most likely the rear end bearings going bad and most likely the pinion bearing. a U-joint will squeal at any speed where a bearing may have good harmonics at lowerspeeds but loses harmonics at higher speeds when power is applied.

my pinion bearing went bad in my 97 firebird and did the same thing

take it to a good tranny/gear shop. they will know what to look for. if it's the rear bearings (which i'm 99%sure it is) it is a perfect time to add better rear gears or at the very least upgrade to a limited slip rear differential like a detroit truetrac or a ford T-lok if you don't plan on alot of power mods

costs to repair

if just replacing the bearings
$65-$80 for the bearing kit
$150-$250 for labor

if a detroit or T-lok is added

$95 for install kit containing all bearings, shims, seals
$170-$400 for differential
$250-$350 labor

you can get a nice set of used 3.73 gears from www.stangparts.com for about $75. they are good quality ford gears and don't worry about them being used. the ring and pinion gears almost never break. even used sets

Agree with cobra232, sounds like what a bad pinion bearing did in my former 1967 F100 P/U

haha oops!

cobra232: Um...yes gears don't break but they just whine like hell and thats just the same (when they are used) I would NEVER get used gears.

my 3.73's had 150,000+ miles on them before they were installed in my car. gears were nice and not sharp and no chips. mine don't whine whatsoever. some may whine alittle after installed but will quiet down after they make a new wear pattern. loud whine is more from a sloppy install than if the gears are used or not

there is nothing wrong with used gears as long as you get them from a reputable place or pull them and inspect them yourself

www.stangparts.com sells excellent quality used gears sets. they are a very reputable company and wouldn't risk selling junk. are there risks to using used gears. absolutely but like i said as long as they are purchased from a reputable place or pull them from a ranger or broncoII yourself like i did

Your experience does not mean everyones will be the same. John Doe can buy used gears with 1000 miles and they will break...what then?
