you can see all you want...to play it safe that is the benchmark to when to go 8.8.....period. Thats like saying you HAVE to forged the bottom end for boost...well yeah you really should....but I "have seen" people go 400rwhp+ with a stock bottom end...doesn't mean its the best idea

the 7.5 has a bad reputation for being weak for 1 main reason. the ford differential blow teeth out of the spyders with little more than stock power and sticky tires with a 3000 clutch drop.

replace the weak link and you no longer have a weak rear.

an 8.8 28 spline has no advantage whatsoever over the 7.5

yes if you add a 31 spline carrier in with the axles it will hold more power but not because the differential is any stronger, it's because the 28 spline axles are the limiting factor in the 7.5. which i have never witnessed a 28 spline failure on anything under 500rwhp. has it happened before? i'm positive it has but not common especially in an automatic equipped car.

i've spent alot of time with these rears and can say that there is little physical difference between the 7.5 and 8.8 that makes the 8.8 differential so superior when we are talking about when the auburn or detroit is used in both. ford's T-lok is pretty much junk for both 8.8 and 7.5. i wouldn't trust grenading the rear over such a lousy part which is why i have a detroit sitting by to go in when i finish everything else

So do the 99-02 Cobra's. So you really think the 7.5 can hold up 500hp? If thats true then why do people like to swap out to the 8.8 rearends. the only reason i can think of is because they come with posi.
there was no 02 cobra, i actually dont even think there was an 01 cobra, too lazy to go google it right now, but the 7.5 can hold a bit more HP then the 7.5, you also have more gear options for the 8.8. 3.55, 3.73 3.90, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56 on top of the 7.5 which has for aftermarket 3.45, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56
there was no 2000 cobras and only a few 02 cobra's made for racing out of the U.S.

if anybody is interested there is a guy at 3.8mustang.com with a slightly used Auburn high perf LSD for a 7.5 for sale for $300 which is about $100 cheaper than new.

it is in the for sale section
