You're not the only one. I think that it is a federal offense (felony?) to dismantle or discard a smog control device on a vehicle driven on a public highway (plated). Mine has cats.

When I asked about the x-pipe on a previous theread, thus sparking this one. In all actuallity, after I got a nights sleep, I remembered what my o-worker told me, some guys get the x-pipe cut-out that removes the cats, and put the cats back on for SMOG. The x-pipe cut-out that SLP and other companies sell is "off road use only".

they sell what they call a modular x pipe , which is in 5 0r 6 sections and comes with cats that are removable. SO u place the tubes they send in place of the cats , when u have to get the car tested just slap the cats back on , no problem. That x is a bit more pricier than the off road one but it sure is worth it if u get tested yearly.

Here's something for thought:
Maybe you could hollow out the cats, leaving there "shell" in place but drilling out the material inside. It's basically a big chunk of honeycomb like material. If you removed that no one would ever know by looking. (Of course you would have to disable the O2 sensors)

Of course this is just a thought, might not really work. But, I can't really see why it wouldn't.
