Synthetic oil

Synthetic oil
I just put a little over 6K miles on the stang (one oil change at 500 then at 3500 so Im getting close). I heard that you should wait till 10K to put full synthetic in (I know Ford uses part synthetic) but is this a little overkill? Is this a good time to use synthetic when I change my oil this week or should I do it next time. Also what is the best synthetic for our cars and is it worth the extra money (Ill always change it at 3K)?

RE: Synthetic oil
You can run synthetics after the first oil change because the rings are seated by then. It probably won't do much over regular oil if you plan on religiously changing your oil every 3k. These days even "regular" oil is pretty good. That said, I run synthetic in mine because it's only a few bucks more.

RE: Synthetic oil
I have 3 other vehicles and run Amsoil in all of them. I plan on switching My Stang to Amsoil but not before 10K, I only have 2,500 on it now. I did the research on Amsoil years ago and INDEPENDANT tests show its the best out there. They also make their own oil filters which are DOUBLE DUTY and the best out there!!

RE: Synthetic oil
First off, ford recommends your FIRST oil change at 5k... waiting till 5K will damage NOTHING...
that said, i changed mine at 600
i will change again at 4000... and then at prolly 8 or 9 and start in with the synthetic...
Though tests have shown breaking in with synthetic makes no difference...
but im an old school kinda guy and like to do **** my way... lol

RE: Synthetic oil
As a longtime oil change freak, all mechanics I have talked to say your first oil change should be 500-1000 miles due to the break in and wear. You need to flush the metal filings out. Engine will last far longer with that first early oil change. That first 1000 miles is when the break in occurs.

RE: Synthetic oil
I'll go with your advice and change it early.
Some ramble...
I'm still a bit nervous about doing it myself. But it's cheaper, faster, and ensures a quality job. In another thread, we discussed jacking the whole front end up by the crossmember (just aft of the radiator) using a floor jack. I'd like some more opinions on this (i.e. should I jack it from under the doors instead?). Sorry to bring it up again.

RE: Synthetic oil
What I did is push your floor jack in at the passenger side door to the frame of the car. About 2 feet. Jack it up then put a jack stand for safety where the "notch" is by the door. I crawled in from under the front.
As I mentioned before in another thread, with all my strenght I could not get the oil filter loose. They over tighten them at the plant with no obvious lubrication on the o-ring gasket. I drained and filled it with 5 quarts of oil then drove to an oil change place with my filter I bought. It took TWO guys to break off the stock filter!! They didnt want to charge me anything but I was happy with them doing it so I gave the boss 20 buck and told him to buy his crew pizza on me. It should be easier now. I watched and told them not to tighten the new filter more than necessary. Never overtighten the filter, just a quarter turn after you feel it tighten. My two cents. Hope it helps.
