Default Why get a tuner?

I have read many posts about tuners from you guys and I understand what they do. I am unsure about why to actually PURCHASE one though. A friend of mine told me that there is a mustang place about 20 miles from me that can program my car. So, my question is what is the actual benefit of having the actual tuner? See, my thinking is this. And I ask that you bare with me because I am learning slowly. But my thinking is this. If I bought a tuner, and then plugged it into my car, reflashed my car to the 93 octane tune was happy with it, why would i want to keep a tuner around? Is it just for the sake of changing from different tunes? I guess what I am asking is, why would I want a tuner when I could just get tuned for say 100 bucks? not sure how much a tune would be. But I do not understand that part yet. Again forgive my elementary question! But After my duals I want the ait intake and a tune.

I thought of the same...but I found a couple of places locally (Thanks Paulboy16) but they charge around $500 for one tune & dyno run...so with a Tuner u get 3 Tunes & the benefit of doing the tunes whenever u want since u own the handheld! I am thinking of picking the SCT one up but now I heard that the Predator ones are better!!! AAAAAAAaaaaargh!!!!

Why you want a tuner at hand......

a) If you want to return the car to "dealer specs" say for a friendly visit to the dealer.....(warranty).
b) It allows you to datalog and correct / tweak things......
c) It is a one time investment rather that having to go to the shop everytime you need something done( kinda renting vs owning).
d) your tuner will allow you to do "mail tunes" where you send a log a good professional over email( maybe far from you.... et voila! an awsome tune) freadom of choice.

those are my reasons for having it (oh and yeah...I do not have a shop nearby)

if you go to a loacal tuner they are going to make you buy an sct xcal 1 or 2, or diablo from them and then you also have to buy dyno and tuning time from them to get your custom tune. Tuners lock to a single car and can not be used on another vehicle until the original program is restored on the car it was programmed for.

Ok I get it now. 500 dollars for a tune. Geez. Plus it makes sense to make it stock again if needing to take it to the dealer. Downloading tunes and creating my own tunes. Cool, makes much more sense to get.

And as for buying and reselling, it'd be worthless. The tuner becomes married to your car and will stay that way until you restore factory defaults.

with all tunes - do you have to have the car dynoed?

i am confused with this also. my husband put something like this on his F-150 and it made a big difference.

sorry to ask a dumb question but i am trying to get as much info so that i can make a decision.

I have tunes for 87, 89, 92 octane so I can select as desired and adjust when gas prices are crazy. Also, being able to pull trouble codes with SCT2 when you have a check engine light is a benefit.

The predator are not better Rican ..i have seen several people change from Predators to SCT with great results, but i have never ..ever know , heard or seen of an SCT XCAL 2 car that changes to Predator...it will never happen ...95 percent of the people here have SCT s only the misinformed and the guys that just did not know any better got the Predator in my opinion . One is head and shoulder above the other. Good Luck

Does anyone have dyno sheets from both products on the "same octane" tune........

I'd hold off making one over the other w/o some real evidence. As for me

only the misinformed and the guys that just did not know any better got the Predator in my opinion

I got it because it was bundled into a package buy..... and have no regrets, the tunes are great. Both instruments are great and offer very similar functionality.

just my .02
