Do you think that 20% all around is too much tint? being in VA its 35%front side 20%rear windows

I don't really have an opinion based on numbers, not sure how they determine the numbers that they choose as a gauge. I was an officer in suburban DC (Maryland) and the tint thing was not a priority to me. Like I said, some of the motorcycle officers had this card that had to be visible behind the tint from the exterior. I don't know what numeric percentage was involved. I would hope that if a car owner takes his car to a tint shop that the shop would be smart enough to not install tint that is over whatever limit is permitted in their respective State.

Another point, with regard to the fine. We were given a book with predetermined fines and set the fine on the issued citation based on that book. I am surprised to hear that a State still makes a ticketed driver call in for an amount, seems like a bunch of extra administrative stuff to deal with for both the driver and the State.

Here in Texas most of the police officers carry a gauge that reads the tint level and there's no slack if it doesn't comply. Legal side window tint is 25% which is plenty dark in my opinion. I'm amazed you can get your tint to 3%, what did you do, spray paint your windows black As for the purpose of the law, I think it's well beyond just the issue of the officer not being able to see inside the car when they pull someone over; it's also so they can check to see if drivers are wearing seatbelts and to make sure they're not drinking booze, smoking weed or kidnapping someone. I don't see a good reason for anyone not to comply with this law, it makes sense. That's not to say I agree with all laws, but in this case it is for the greater good in my opinion.

I have an 81 Ford F-100 and did my rear window in "limo black" from a sheet of tint from a auto parts store. Its too damn dark anyway and peeling so after reading this I'm peeling it off or replacing the rear window. Can't hardly see through with the rear view mirror anyways at night.

Is it really 35% in VA? I read 50, on a few websites:

http://www.tintdude.com/ptow.html
http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/VA/

I've seen pics of a few cars with 30-35% or something and thought it looked OK. But I've gotten enough tickets already for various things, and I'd rather not give the cops any "bait," so I don't really want to break any laws on this one.

If anybody has any info in the laws in VA regarding this, I'd appreciate it.

You guys are lucky. Here in Calgary, Canada the tint laws are:

Driver Side and Front passenger side = No Tint allowed at all

Rear Driverside & Passenger Side & Rear Windshield = As Dark as you want ie. 5%

It looks gay having all your windows nice and dark, then BAM the fronts are crystal clear...looks cheesy imo

I think you are right, it shows the same thing here:

I'm sure if you dig a little you can find it on the Virginia DOT web site.
