well on older cars water is fine if teh engine isnt hot, but with new cars i believe theres far too many electronics to just soak em in water, try google and look for an engine cleaner i think theres one taht goes on like a "wax" just spray on wipe off.
i used to power wash the engine bays of all different cars, when i rains and u go thru a puddle ur engine gets soaked anyways... i would first spray sum degreaser on then power wash (for a used car salesmen) ask a local garage im sure they will say powerwash/steamclean/hose off is totaly fine.
i power wash mine every time i wash and wax my stang and it has had no problem with it. and if it dose i would rather it do it when im washing than on a rainy day.
