Whats Going on With My Exhaust!?!?!?!
Two days ago I had the drivers side gt muffler put in. The passenger side was already well broken in and was on for a couple of months. At idle and when I rev it in park it sounds GREAT! just like my single one did. When I put it in drive and get up to about 3K RPMS it sounds like a dirtbike or a giant weedwhacker; its not one uniform growl, its a deep putting sound. I have an H-pipe. How can the exhaust tone change so much from reving to driving and why do my dual gt takeoffs sound nothing like my single, at all? Could i be because one is already broken in? HELP PLEASE!

When u say it sounds like a dirtbike, do u mean like there is something inside of the muffler? I know mine had a small iron ball that was a piece of a weld when the muffler dude was building my H-Pipe that ha rolled into it and was bouncing around in it..so he had to cut the muffle down and insert a rod magnet & shake the muffler into it all came out...

Nope, just looked, nothing in it, but not really the sound its making. It sounds like a pre-runner. When I went out I started the car and sat on both sides of the car and reved the engine. The passenger's side (the side that was on for a couple of months sounds great) and the new one, the drivers side is making the bad sound. If a muffler is broken in does it flow better? Could it be that most of the exhaust is still going through the passenger side and im hearing the drivers side muffler "putting" as it gets exhaust? Or do I just have to wait for the driver's side to break in and im unhappy because im getting a bunch of different tones with a broken in muffler and a brand new 1?

From what I understand, a muffler/pipes break in due to the continued exposure to the hot exhaust & pressure generated by the exhaust, thus causing the metal to soften up & mold around the airflow to provide better sound....I think that may be the case here...your new one is still a newbie so it has not broken in yet...it maybe a waiting game!

GREAT[8D]! LOL Will it take longer than normal for the new muffler to break in now that the old one already is and will this be a significant time? I know it took a month or two for the other one to sound how it does now. I think, like you said, the other one is flowing better then the new one and causing weird sounds. Should it take long for them to equal out, Im worried because the other one took two months on 6 cylinders and this one is on three (essentially).

LOL...yeah you're right essentially it may take a bit longer to break in. What u may be able to do is take to either Midas or Meineike & have their techs talk to you...they may be able to shed more light on it.
