What is black shielded thing underneath in back?

What is black shielded thing underneath in back?
Howdy. Dumb question I suppose, but what is the black thing underneath in the back center next to the muffler? It seems to house a number of electronics and such. I don't know how to serach for this question in here, so pardon me if it the answer is already available. You can see it easily by looking just under the car from the rear. You practically do not have to bend over to see it. Sorry I don't currently have a pic of the item.
I noticed it seems to hang down a bit, but not so low as to be a problem. I bought the car used with 943 miles on it, but I doubt this thing is after market. It seems factory and part of the car. I even had some mechanics check out the car for me and they asked me what it is??? lol.... Does anyone know?

Edit: If it helps, this is a v6 model.

this is the main reason i started modding... i was happy stock but everyone kept asking what the black thing was, can hardly notice it witht he gt bumper on. PM me for a quote on a painted rear gt takeoff

lol.... Mine's not a parachute... I think. And thanks, but am not so concerned that it be covered with a GT bumper. I just found it odd that a mechanic could not even guess what it was. Again, he did say it housed a myriad of electronic panels/circuit boards and such so it is more than just a shield for the gas tank. Well, at least until more folks that peruse these forums see this post, it is good to know that I asked a temporary stumper of a question rather than a "duh... don't you know?" kind of question. But then again, I am an unabashed and fully admitted newbie.
