You didn't say what year your Mustang is, but check out the following link. It shows a list of Technical Service Bullitins TBS's (the link can also be found at the top of this page in the blue band). Search for your year Mustang, and check the TSB's for the fuel system. Your problem might be included in a TSB. There have been quite a few similar complaints.

I had a similar problem, I'd go to fill up and it wouldnt even take it but a couple of gallons maybe 2-3 the rest would just run down the side of the car and squirt out. I just took it to the dealership and they replaced the whole gas tank and now its fine.

The service manager at my dealer said that if you take the nozzle and turn it upside down it will usually take care of it. I run into this problem once in awhile - I have the 2006 so it appears to be differences between gas stations and the pressure they deliver the fuel. My car wasn't covered by the TSB.

I have this same problem!!, I cannot put chevron gas!! I only can use shell.... I think it has something to do with their nozzles... I told my dealership about the problem and they didnt know what I was talking about... GRR!
