Calling all cars...calling all cars....

I'm here to put out a general call to knowledgeable individuals. In December of '06 I bought a 2005 Mustang V6 Automatic. Unfortunately for me, I come from a family where driving Buicks is the standard. So what am I looking for? I want to know what can be done to my Mustang to increase performance without voiding out my warrantee.

Any and all info is welcome...just understand that I am a complete and utter beginner. Luckily, my uncle has been a mechanic for over 20 years and owned his own garage for a while so he has access to a lot of equipment.

From something as simple as what tires to look into, or what air filter to try out...to things that are way more complex, I'm looking for a "modification foundation".

But please...keep the following in mind: Avoid abbreviations...b/c I doubt I'll recognize them. If at all possible mention realistic costs associated with the upgrade. And keep them performance based. I'll do my very best to get a hold of a digital camera at some point to get a picture up. My car is torch red with black racing stripes down the middle. I took off the mustang decals on the sides b/c they started to peel after a couple of months. Red leather interior with the interior upgrade package.

I live on Long Island right at the Queens/Nassau border. And I challenge you! If you know as much as you think you do about upgrading a V6 to help make it a step above the rest, then you should be able to explain some stuff to a complete nooblette such as myself. I'll continue roaming the forum and soaking it all in. Thanks in advance to anyone who posts here - even if it's just to wish me luck!!

That is classic.

I can't offer you any help, because I'm trying my best to keep my car 100% stock. But half of the posts in this forum are about performance enhancements. Have you bothered to read any of them yet?

Hey Diesel, welcome to the family.

Hands down, the easiest thing you can do to get more ponies out of your mustang is a Cool Air Intake (CAI) kit and a tune. It seems the intake of choice is the C&L, although I can't speak for everyone.

The tuner we use is just a simple flashing tool, it's called the SCT Xcalibrator 2. You plug it in, press a few buttons, and it will load one of three tunes that your tuner had given you.

You can go to Evolution Performance and buy this kit for $565 for a moderate, but noticable, increase in power. Other vendors to look at are BamaChips, Alternative Auto, and Brenspeed.

You may find that you're aching for a rumble.. dual exhaust will remedy that ache, my friend. I'm using dual magnaflows.. they're okay, I'd give them an 8/10 for quality. I know MRT is a favorite on these boards, as well as Flowmasters, JBAs, Borlas, GT take-offs and a few others. These exhaust systems are probably worth a good 2-5HP.. but it's more for the sound and appearance than it is for performance.

How did you travel forward in time time to buy your car? j/k (JUST KIDDING). All in good fun, I assure you. Welcome to the forum. Spartan VI offered some very good advice on ways to increase the performance of your car. Once you get the CAI/tune, you'll probably want new gears - either 3.73:1 (IMO the better choice) or 4.10:1 gears. Install a LSD (limited slip differantial) at the same time.

Best of luck!

As for warranty issues, after you install the CAI & tuner program, keep the stock airbox and when you need warranty work, replace the CAI (only a couple of minutes) and re-tune your car to the stock tune. If there are any issues with the dual exhausts it will effect only the exhaust itself; assuming a clean install, all other warranty sections will remain intact. Welcome to the forums and good luck.

EDIT: Oh, and I see you're in NY where I beleive you have 93 octane gasoline. Go for the 93 octane tune and you'll get a real kick in the butt boost.

And go to this post for lots of info and definitions:

So far so good....after only a few posts by some helpful, and not so helpful, forum members I am well on my way. I definitely earned the ribbing I got right out of the gates...but I figured I'd just jump in the deep end and 'fess up about being ignorant. I HAVE been reading through a lot of the threads that are V6 specific (Drivetrain Performance, Handling Performance, and Appearance Modifications). Not all of them are geared towards the novice Mustang owner, so it's just a bit of a learning process. I will continue to sift through all the forums and soak as much in as I can. I suppose I was just looking for a good place to start.

The info I received on Cool Air Intakes seems sound. I will probably wait until my warrantee is up though before actually making any changes. In the meantime I have a K&G air filter. A guy has to start somewhere.

I have a problem though....it seems like every time I log on here it's at least 3 hours before I get up. For someone who loves his car, but is just learning about what's out there, there's a lot to take in. Thanks again to everybody for all your info. I really appreciate it. And I'll try to get a picture ASAP.

hey man, welcome to the forum! i bet you will like it here, i know all of us do

people havent really mentioned the axle or cat back exhausts. the axle backs (muffler only) will give you more gains, but i have to say that the daul exhausts (which are cat backs) look very very cool.

ps. sorry if i insulted you with how basic i put the terms in....i didnt know how to gauge "novice"

No insult here. The only reason that I kinda knew what you were talking about is because I went to the link that BlueStang6 posted and it goes through a lot of the terminology. So basically I've been familiar with the difference between Axelback and Catback for almost 7 minutes. Before that time I thought LSD was a hallucinagen and not something that prevented skidding tires!
