Default Changing air filter..

Is it worth it to change from a stock air filter to a "high performance" K&N filter? Will there bee any gains...? is it better for the engine.. etc?

Thanks.

I didn't notice any gains when I replaced mine. I only chose the k&n over the other filters because I am able to clean and reuse the filter.

I would just get the K&N cold air intake. Don't bother with a aftermarket K&N stock filter if you are going to mod. Its a wast of money in my opinion.

I have K&Ns in both cars and my motorcycle, mostly for the ease of maintenance. I have a GT TAKE-OFF muffler on my V-6 and wanted to get just a bit more air in the motor. A recent combined highway/city run yielded over 27 MPG.

That's basically my situation. Thanks..

just thought id put my 2 cents in, i definately see where your coming from if your going to spend 35 bucks on a factory filter you may as well spend maybe another 5 or 10 on a k&n because its reusable and the recharge kits are pretty cheap. i work at a ford dealership and this is a common thing for us....the only draw backto a k&n is if the oil gets sucked on to the mass air flow sensor, it will confuse it and either cause a driveability concern, check engine light or both. not saying it will for sure 100% but if it does it wont be covered under warranty and you'll be stuck with the diag bill. i have a k&n cold air kit on my car that i am taking off because my check engine light keeps coming on with rich codes and im tired of clearing the light. not trying to sound like a know it all, just wanted to help you out if i could.

JETT BLACK,

There have been numerous posts on here. It wouldn't matter WHAT filter you put on the end of the cold air kit; apparently it draws TOO much into the intake system and the computer doesn't compensate. I never get a check engine light on either the MUSTANG or my K&N equipped ESCAPE with just the drop in filter, it is my understanding from reading posts that most of the guys do an electronic tune to the computer to compensate for the added air in the system with the cold air kit.

As for oil going into the air intake system, I suppose if one were to saturate the gauze with the spray on oil, this might be an issue. The filter just requires a light fogging of oil.

Good post, some good discussion.
