Default RE: Changing air filter..

I was almost convinced to remove my K&N drop-in filter due to discussions on the filter oil contaminating the MAFS. But... I ultimately arrived at the hypothesis (from reading pros & cons and experiences) that problems of this nature will be most likely attributed to over saturating the filter with oil during a cleaning. Mine was installed new, with the factory oil and I have no engine lights or any other issues of note in about 10k miles of use so far. I even took off the MAFS to clean it just in case and while I may not be able to readily see trace oil amounts with the naked eye.... that thing was just as clean as a whistle.

As for any improvements, nothing tremendous, but I personally noticed more pep in my acceleration (V6 Automatic BTW) and a touch throatier/meaner sound. I also later put on a GT take off muffler and the two combined are just a fine improvement in terms of a tad more power and much more respectable sound (without it being over board). But the drop-in K&N filter alone impressed me actually.

Just my 2 cents. [8D]

I've cleaned my K+N filter twice now with no problems. No engine light. Just don't overspray the oil on it.
I noticed a bit more accelaration and a bit more nicer sound. Worth the price for sure. Put one on my new F-250 too.

my car set the light twice with the kit and i had done nothing more than install it straight from the factory. we see a lot of people oversaturate them as well as let them go completely dry and when there is as much dust in the intake as there is in the engine compartment the engines dont like that. i used a drop in filter in my 96 f150 and never had a problem. like i said originally, i wasnt trying to say dont buy one or this will happen, just saying if it does cause a check engine light and the vehicle is under warranty the dealer will not cover an aftermarket part because i see a lot of posts on here with people wondering what is or is not warranty; since i work at a dealership i just thought id try to help out is all.

Thanks jettblack for the info. I may in the future switch an Amsoil air filter (replacable). They make the best oil filters bar none if you check the comparisons on the web they are like a double-filter. I use them on all 4 of my vehicles.
I'm getting nervous about the spraying of oil/engine light syndrome and I don't want any problems.
Thanks again!
Tom

im sorry if i have given you a bad impression of performance filters because you do get better flow with them but just like with anything though there can be consequences of an item. im not trying to sound like a know it all, just trying to help is all.

I have the K&N filter and have had no problems. I have been using K&N in all my vehicles, including my bikes.

I did not notice any performance gains from my seat of the pants dyno.[sm=yikesomg.gif]

yeah thats the worst part, i swapped my stock intake back onto the car and noticed no difference. if you had a tune or nitrous it would definately be worth it but unless you are running WOT you wont be getting any more air to the engine with a k&n over stock.

I'd save the $40 and go for a CAI, instead of throwing another drop in filter. IMO
