My fiance's car has 28k miles on it and I figured it was time to be changed. Does it need it now or should I wait?

I've not looked at mine but I think they are putting bigger-longer lastingfuel filters on cars these days. It used to be included in the maint shedule to change like every 30k or so. But now they go alot longer.
Check the maint schedule that came with the car. But I'm guessing it is more 50k or better before you need to change it unless something bad has happened ehh.

My ASE cert'd father-in-law recommends to change out every 50k miles on all cars. Just make sure that whenever you put gas in your car the station isn't "dumping" a load in to the tanks. That stirs up the sediment that will block the filter. Drive to another one, even if it is your favorite station.

50K is pushing it hard imho.

It's a $15 part that takes twenty minutes to change. I do mine about every 15K. Cheap insurance.

It's not bad.

Pull the fuel pump relay (furthest towards the back in the underhood junction box. Crank the car to relieve fuel pressure

Jack the car up and remove the plastic cover over the filter (a few bolts/nuts). Remove the old filter (has clips on each end that just require pressing a tab to unlock)

Put new filter in and reverse disaasembly steps. 20 minutes easy.

I just changed the fuel filter in my wife's Grand Prix GT a few weeks ago. It had around 40k miles on it. When I blew through the filter (which expells whatever it caught), it looked pretty darn clean. But I agree, I only have 11k on my 'stang and probably won't wait even to 40k to change it. I guess 50k should be the max.
