Default Awful Gas Mileage

Hey everyone

I'm getting worse gas mileage out of my 05 V6 than my buddy is getting out of his 05 GT. WTF? I get like 15 in the city and 19 on the highway. I've talked to enough people to know that most are getting like 18-19 in the city which is what i should be getting. This is starting to **** me off. I'm getting 6 cylinder performance with 8 cylinder gas mileage. When i first got the car i thought that it was normal, but 7 thousand miles later i'm not so sure. I've had the car for about 16 months now and i've only put 7,000 miles on it because i don't use it much at college.

Anyone have this problem with their 05 V6s? BTW i feed it 87 and i'm not a lead foot around the city.

Retrosix,

I get 23 city and 27.5 hwy on 92 octane gas with a cold air kit and custom tune. However, a buddy of mine with the stock setup gets the same type mileage you experienced. He brought it back to the dealership and they reflashed his computer, replaced his plugs, wires, MAF sensor, 02 sensors, gas filter and flushed his gas tank (all over a six month period). All to no avail. They've pushed the problem back to Ford and are awaiting a solution.

I would suggest you get it into a dealership ASAP to get the problem documented. That way if a fix is found even after your warranty expires it can still be fixed.

imho......my mileage goes down the more i put my foot in it.....i had similar thoughts and then laid off a little......it all depends on you drive as well...moving traffic, sitting idle, putting your fooot in it etc....

I am averaging 10 in the city. The computer and my calculations are as close as .5 mpg. I'm attributing it to my lead foot.. and the fact that I only drive around 10 miles a day on average (during the week)... but that seems awful low to me... I can get up to 30 mpg on the highway if I go 60mph.
When I take it into get an oil change, I think I will mention it.

My completely stock V6 gets about 23 mpg in the city (it's at about 2800 miles and has been getting the same mileage consistenty since it was new.) That's in warm weather, mind you. When it's cold you spend more time idling warming up and idling in traffic, which cuts it back a bit, but even so I'm probably around 19-20 mpg in cold winter weather.

Do you drive it really hard? I'm usually crusing at around 1200-1300 RPM and if I'm driving with gas mileage in mind, the shifts are usually come between 1800-2100 RPM. I walk on it from time to time, but generally don't push the car too hard and my mileage has been really solid.

Plenty of variables determine MPG, most are well-known:a leadthrottle foot on acceleration is the likely driver-controlled cause. Something wrong with the engine-tune or controller or transmission, pinched exhaust, some defect that resists rolling are possibilities that an automotive specialist can deal with.

Of the dozen or so cars I have had while living in this house, I learned to expect each would just make it far enough into the street to turn without backing further, if I let them roll out of the driveway in neutral; this one (2006 V6 automatic convertible) would roll all the way to the end of the block, if I'd let it. That was on the original 16" Goodrich tires; with the 17" Bullitt/Pirellis, it only goes about four houses down.

Just for data points: I've driven it less tha a thousand miles in the three months since I bought it with 14K on the clock, and get:
Mixed use -- 16-18MPG (around town, "testing", etc.)
Over-the-road -- 24-25MPG (keeping up with San Diego to L.A. traffic at75-85MPH, with some stop-and-go in the L.A.mess.

There may be unknowns in your MPG equation, but a scientific approach will reveal them. Contrary to what is taught in some Colleges,
"In this universe there are things
that just don't yield to thinking
—plain or fancy—Dude".
—J. Spicoli, PolyPartyPerson

Good luck,

Also... I think Saint Louis gas may have more ethanol than other areas. That also decreases gas milage. But i'm pretty sure it's my driving.. I bought this car to de-stress to and from work... and getting on it does the trick.

I normally get about 18mpg.

Recently its been 10-30 degrees where I am, and I have noticed that my mpg went down to 16.

Plus I have a lead foot.

Gas milage will always go down it the winter months
They use an additive that lowers the freezing point .I can't remember what it is off hand but everybody gets it in the u.s. no matter where you live.
