Default Exhaust nightmare

I`ve just come back from my third visit to the exhaust shop who have fitted my GT takeoffs. [:@]
First visit no clearance over the back axle, so any bumps or speedbumps (lots of these in the UK) and clang!!
Went back again and again no good, clang!!
Today went again and all seemed great . The new pipework looked great, just like the original pipework on the other side. That was until I got home and dropped off a speedbump, clang! I`m getting really PI**ED off.
I can`t see where it`s not clearing, theres plenty of ground clearance and over the axle seems fine too, but something is contacting somewhere. I now have a deep thrumm/vibration through the car when it`s hot and idleing at traffic lights too, is this normal for duals? The system was split from the CATs back, running seperate pipes to each muffler.
Anybody had problems like this? I know if I go slower large bumps it wont happen but it` doing this with no passangers in the back!!
I think I`m going to have to take the car somewhere else and spend out again [:@][]
and this shop was recommended by three other members of the UK Mustang owners club!!

That sucks I had the exact same problem, so I bought the JBA Dual exhuast kit which comes with the piping already and all the clamps needed and went to a Mustang Specialist shop to have it installed and came out awesome, I hated it to, I feel for ya hope you get it fixed.

Ahoy mate!
Yah, I've got basically the same pony with true duals too.
Your driver side exhaust pipe is most likely resting on the upper torsion bar that goes across and above the rear axle. The way to get it to clear if all else fails is to pull enough of the inner exhaust pipe out of the sleeve of the muffler enough to raise the over axle part of the pipe far enough to clear the torsion bar or link. If you look up under your car on the drivers side, you'll see what I'm talking about. You will have to either jack the car up on that side a bit or you can squeeze under enough to look. Take a flash light with you of course ;-). Another thing you can do by the way is losen and twist the pipe a bit to clear but they've probably already tried that. They sound like retards from your discription and I would agree you should take it elsewhere and have someone who is competitent take care of it for you. Tell them what I said and they should easily be able to solve your problem.
Hope this helps!

Sorry I don't have a solution to your problem, but I think that it shows what can happen when you allow a muffler shop to 'fab up' an exhaust system. I hope that by reading this, someone else might be spared the problems that you have experienced. Ford pipes fit. Why not use them whenever you can? I know that there are places where it's tough to get the right parts.A Ford RacingGT X or H pipe plus Ford GT mid-pipes will work great on this conversion. It makes sense doesn't it? I mean, they made the car they should know how the pipe needs to be bent. I hope that you can get it straightened out and it doesn't cost you a fortune. Best of luck. Dave

I have the exact same problem as you. Had the pipes fabricated at a muffler shop, now there is NO back pressure and it vibrates/pulsates at low idle/sitting at a stop light. I shouldve taken 68X57's advice and bought the GT pipes and an X-Pipe from the get go but i didnt, trying to save some money ended up costing me. Now more then likely i will have to buy a new exhaust system made specifically for the v6 mustang, pry the magnaflow or jba since i dont think there is anything else i can do to fix the problem. Good luck with getting it figured out i know it sucks bad.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately it`s not so straightforeward since I can`t just drop in to my local Ford dealer here in the UK and get the parts.
I can live with things as they are for a while. I`ve been given the details of a custom exhaust specialst recommended by other members of the Mustang owners club here in the UKso I`m going to contact them and look into getting a kit shipped from the US or have them make a custom stainless steel system. Have any of you found an aftermarket exhaust hanging bracket for the `stang, or some way to get the genuine ones cheaper. For me here in the uk they would cost £50 each plus 17.5% tax I guess thats about $80 each if not more!!!

My is having the same issue with my magnaflows. My Dad works for Ford and spent hours trying to figure it out but couldnt, we took it to a muffler shop and they actually cut out part of the pipes and added a longer piece to it, well it works fine til i hit a bump or after hard acceleration. We still cant find a solution because everything seems fine when the car is off.
Good luck with the issue, i knoweverytime i hear that clanking its upseting so i know how you must feel.

I did GT take-off duals, and had a rare "clunk" over certain road conditions. I had an idea where it was contacting, the shop fabbed drivers side over axel pipe, so I took some of the kids driveway chalk and rubbed a bunch on the underbody, went for a drive until it clunked and took it home and ID'd the exact spot.

Bought some orangehigh temp gasket caulk and made a 1/4" thick disk of it using a large bottlecap lying around as a mold. Next day after the disk was cured I cleaned the underbody area with alcohol and used some more of the gasket maker to attach the disk to the underbody. It's been there almost 2 years now with no problem, and the clunk noise it gone.

Yeah, exact fitting pipes would have been great, but this was a pretty easy after the fact fix and it worked for me. Good luck.
