i tend to get around 275-280 total miles on a full tank averaging around 16 in the city and 21(ish) on the freeway, Im bone stock live in Dallas, take freeway home everynite/ drive city in morning
hope your issue gets resolved, maybe a cai i dont know....to answer your average mph elroyjetson_1978 is right, they take your average lets say you go 50 for a couple minutes, the system will register 50 maybe 3times? i dont know the exacts , then slow down to 25....down to stop at 0 then back up to 50...
225 total mph/6 registries=37.5mph
or if it registers twice for that long 50mph in two minutes (once every minute) 175/5=35mph
just a guess using math

The computer probably determines your range ("Miles to Empty") based on your previous MPG, if you get 18MPG, it will compute 18MPGx16gal = 288miles.
I get:
25MPGx16gal = 400miles

Sounds like the program is working right to me.

Try an experiment: Reset your MPG setting at speed coasting, so it registers high, I've actually pegged mine at 99.9MPG, and then pull off and fill up while the number is high. Then we can see whether it is the LAST reading, or the average of the last FEW readings it uses to determine MtoE.

Gee, getting all scientific here! I feel like I'm back at school. Where's that graphing calculator?...

might be a bad fuel pump too. i know mine was getting really bad mileage on the highway(23mpg). and i took it in cuz i was like WTF ya know. and they ran some tests and just on a hunch the service manager said myb we should change the fuel pump, and bingo... what do u know, i get between 29 and 32 mpg on the highway now, and lik 20 to 23 in the city. and for the most part my car is pretty much stock. i got an s&b intake, jba shorties, and flowmaster AT single. and some eibach sportlines and some 18 inch Hot Wheels Redlines

Yea, I need to look into it. The dealer had my car for a week and I missed it, just don't want to take it back again! I'm gonna have to do something about it soon, it's really bugging me. I drive all highway and get high teens to low 20's...And it doesn't go above 3500 RPM (overdrive) much at all..

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm going to give it one or two more tanks to see what happens. If anything gets fishy with them, I'm taking it to the dealership to have them look at the entire fuel system.

yeah I had no idea how the computer actually worked for the average mph but i was just guessing with logical math...your MtoE theory sounds very sound though...usually when Im at a half a tank, which I am currently it says 187 miles to empty.... so multiply that by two and you get 374 so your calculations seem to be correct
hah those graphing calculators....still use em in med school(aka death school)...one day I am going to try your little high mph then fill up experiment!
