Default Rear Gear replacement.

How hard is it to change the rear gears for someone with basic tools and medium experience. I've done Cam replacemnts on cars and such but never replaced a differential. Anyone did it on their own? do I need special press or special tools? shop wants to charge me $600.

Apparently its not easy to do right, since you need very precise gear alignment and need to work with backlash. You should be able to getthem installed for 300-400 if you shop around, while your at it, get them to install a locker diff since they can do both at the same time, for the same price. Saves you a second installation fee in the future.

you need a dial indicator, some gear paint, lipstick works. but if you dont know what is involved, you shouldnt be doing it, anyone can pull off a cam install, but i know mechanics that are even afraid of doing diff's
